Local students receive Franklin B. Walter Awards
The East Central Ohio Educational Service Center (ECOESC) is happy to announce the high school seniors who were honored as the 25th annual Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award recipients at a luncheon and awards ceremony in Columbus April 9 at the DoubleTree-Worthington. Graham Sabo, a senior from New Philadelphia High School is the Tuscarawas County recipient. Sabo is the son Harriett and Stephen Sabo of New Philadelphia. He has been accepted at Cornell Universitys College of Arts and Sciences and has selected biological sciences as his major. The Harrison County recipient is Brynlynn Belknap, a senior from Conotton Valley High School. Belknap is the daughter of Shawn and Brenda Belknap of Bowerston. She will attend Ohio University and has plans to major in early childhood education. Addie Davis, a senior at Carrollton High School, is the winner from Carroll County. Davis will attend Ohio Northern University with plans to major in pre-med biology. She is the daughter of Dave and Jana Davis of Scio. The Belmont County recipient is Chainey Boroski, a senior from Martins Ferry High School. Boroski plans to study ecology and environmental biology at Yale University or Vanderbilt University in the fall. She is the daughter of Jill Boroski of Martins Ferry. This is the 25th year for the Ohio Educational Service Center Associations (OESCA) Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award program. Each recipient was presented with a plaque and a medallion designating him or her as a scholar. Kevin Spears, president of OESCA and the superintendent of the ECOESC, congratulated the recipients and welcomed their families and school representatives to the awards luncheon. The presentation of awards was given by Craig Burford of OESCA. He advised the students to remember what and who brought them to this point in their lives. Burford also asked the students to use their knowledge and talents to benefit their state and country. Richard Ross, Ohios superintendent of public instruction, also addressed the scholars and congratulated the students and their parents.The Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award was established in 1989 by Ohios County Superintendents to recognize and promote student achievement and academic accomplishment. One senior from each of Ohios 88 counties receives this prestigious honor each year. The award bears the name of Franklin B. Walter who served as state superintendent from 1977-1991.
