Matt Carpenter, director of pupil services, told the board of education at the Nov. 15 meeting that the Little Tiger Preschool recess room, located inside the administration building, has opened for the preschoolers.

“The students love the room and would rather play in there instead of going outside,” Carpenter said.

He said plans are to continue improving the preschool and the recess room for the students. Carpenter also said an application will be made for a grant to become a Purple Star School. During a football game this fall, the military and first responders were honored, and that is the first step toward receiving the award.

The board held an abbreviated meeting out of respect for the Tuscarawas Valley School District community and the tragedy that occurred Nov. 14. The accident took the lives of three students, a teacher and two parent chaperones.

In another matter the board agreed to abandon a 2010 International school bus that has mileage of 207,262. Trevor Gummere, treasurer, said the district will eventually sell the bus and purchase a new school bus.

The board also did the following:

—Heard testing is completed for the gifted students.

—Learned Tana Martin, cafeteria manager, will give a report at the Dec. 20 meeting. The school cafeteria received a clean food inspection.

—Approved Mark Lancaster, volunteer middle school basketball coach.

—Accepted a donation of $294 from the Class of 1962.
