The Dover Public Library will kick off summer reading on Saturday, June 1 for kids in preschool to sixth grade. The theme this summer is “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” The adventure will begin in the children’s department with kids entering a candy factory.

“The children’s department will be transformed into a candy factory,” library specialist Christine Metzger said.

Each child will receive a small bag to pick some treats — sugar-free candies available — after they sign up for summer reading. The kids also will receive a coupon for a free ticket to the Ohio State Fair, a coupon for a discount to staying at a state park and a reading tracker bookmark.

“We have a lot of fun surprises in store,” Metzger said.

Sign-up will be open Saturday, June 1 starting at 10 a.m.

The month of June will continue with other events. Story times will have themes on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.

“We will have an animal tracks story time on June 5 at the Dover pond area,” said Jen Gardner, children’s department manager.

Other story times will include Lots of Bubbles on June 12 and Farrah Raines story time and movement on Saturday, June 15. A visit from the State Highway Patrol for a story will be Wednesday, June 19. The month will conclude with a progressive story time on Saturday, June 29, where kids will travel around the library for stories and different activities.

The library also will offer other programs for children in June.

On Saturday, June 8 at 11 a.m., there will be wind chime making in the children’s room. Auntie E. will bring her animal friends to meet library friends on Saturday, June 22 at 1 p.m.

The month will wrap up with the fourth annual Dino Dig on Saturday, June 29 at 11 a.m. Kids will be able to dig for fossils and miniature dinosaurs, explore some dinosaur territory and more.

Kids are encouraged to fill out as many adventure map book trackers as they want all summer. When returning the first map tracker, kids will receive an adventure book and cinch sack. They also will be put in a drawing for over 20 prizes including an instant digital camera and accessories and a microscope. Each additional tracker they turn in will get more chances to win prizes at the end of July.

All of this is made possible from the following sponsors: Directions Credit Union, Dover Exchange Club, Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union, Friends of the Dover Public Library, Dover Hydraulics, Dover Chemical, The Emporium, Kimble Companies, McDonald’s, Peterman Plumbing, Todd Trimble with American Family Insurance and Wendy’s.
