Financially speaking, attending all of the Special Olympics events can add up quickly for the many Special Olympics teams made up of groups from various Board of Developmental Disabilities around the state.

Holmes County BDD is no different, committing to send its athletes to as many functions as possible, including the heavily anticipated Summer Special Olympic Games.

In order to alleviate some of those expenses, Knights of Columbus is stepping up in a big way.

KoC is currently in the midst of its SuperCa$h Bonanza, an effort to raise $1 million for Ohio charities, and one of those charities is focused on helping to provide funds that will ensure teams are able to send all of their athletes to the summer games and other special needs activities.

“It’s not cheap to send our Special Olympic teams to different competitions throughout the year,” said Marianne Mader, Holmes County Board of Developmental Disabilities superintendent. “Whenever there is an Ohio Special Olympic event, we have to pay registration fees for the teams or players, travel expenses and more. By becoming involved with this raffle through the Knights of Columbus, we will receive funds to offset registration fees.”

SuperCa$h Bonanza is the Ohio State Council’s annual charity campaign. The income generated from the charity campaign provides a significant amount of funding for many charitable organizations throughout Ohio including United Way, veterans, food pantries, church groups, school systems, community projects and more.

The campaign is completely funded through the raffle ticket sales, and this raffle’s payout is quite expansive.

First prize is $49,680 with monthly payments of $414 for 10 years. Second prize is $18,780 with monthly payments of $313 for five years. Third prize is $12,720 with monthly payments of $212 for five years.

Additional prizes range from one-time payments of between $4,000 and $500, with 25 total cash prizes available.

Tickets are only a donation of $5 apiece with all of the proceeds going to an organization devoted to helping other organizations around the state find success.

The prize drawing will take place live on May 18 at the annual KoC convention, with the official winner’s list posted the following day.

“It’s a big win for us, so we encourage everyone to purchase tickets to help out with this raffle. And who knows? They could end up winning a lot of money while supporting a tremendous cause,” Mader said.

Tickets for the KoC raffle are available now through any HCBDD Special Olympics athlete or at the HCBDD facility south of Holmesville. In addition, tickets will be sold throughout the night at the upcoming Holmes County Bucks vs. Holmes County Community All-Stars basketball game at West Holmes High School on Thursday, March 28, with the game slated to take place at 7 p.m.

The Knights of Columbus was formed in 1881 in New Haven, Connecticut as a fraternal benefit society. The Knights were formed to render financial aid to members and their families during times of hardship. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families.
