Kids can read books to a dog or bunny

Reluctant readers can practice their reading skills at the Tuscarawas County Main Library and Bolivar Branch Library this fall.
Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to practice their reading skills in one-on-one sessions with a certified therapy dog or a Flemish bunny.
“These programs were created to help kids gain confidence, improve their reading skills and provide a reading buddy eager to listen without judgment,” children’s services manager Mary Smrek said.
Certified therapy dog Joe will be at the Tuscarawas County Main Library on select Tuesdays at 6 p.m. starting Sept. 10. Children also can read to Tucker, a Flemish bunny, at the Bolivar Branch Library on Thursday, Oct. 17 and Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.
Kids can register for 15-minute time slots by calling the Tuscarawas County Main Library at 330-364-4474 or the Bolivar Branch Library at 330-874-2720 or by visiting the library’s online event calendar at www.tusclibrary.org.
The Tuscarawas County Main Library is located at 121 Fair Ave. NW in New Philadelphia and the Bolivar Branch Library is located at 455 W. Water St.
