John H. Barnett, a local Carroll County historian, will walk through the 40-decade history of LIFE magazine on Tuesday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Dover Public Library. Several original copies of LIFE magazine will be on display in the library during the month of June.

In 1936, long before television and even radio, a new magazine hit the homes in America during the years of The Depression. LIFE magazine was a way of showing the farmers and factory workers how the nation was growing in science and industry, as well as covering events around the world, when the rise of nationalism was growing, bringing nations on the verge of another world war.

The span of LIFE magazine from 1936 to the end of weekly publication in 1972 showed the American public a broader picture of the world, displaying photos shot by the best photographers at that time.

Barnett grew up in a railroad family and graduated from Carrollton High School. He worked on the railroad for 42 years. He has served as a history adviser to Hudson Schools and United Local High School. Because his passion is military history, Barnett reenacts the Civil War and WWII. His expertise includes the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Civil War Gen. Benjamin F. Potts.

This program will be held in the community room at the DPL, 525 N. Walnut St., Dover. Register online at www.doverlibrary.org/events or call the library at 330-343-6123.
