Hiland Academic Boosters provide food for thought

Usually, when someone digs into a sub sandwich, their thoughts are on instantly gratifying their hunger.
However, the Hiland Academic Booster Club’s annual sub auction provides plenty of food for thought, and that thought is helping to provide funds that will go toward the annual support of Hiland graduating seniors who are heading off to a place of higher education.
OK, granted the sub sandwiches also are pretty excellent tasting as well.
The Hiland Academic Booster Club will host its 30th annual sub auction on Friday, Jan. 5, immediately following the Hiland Hawks boys varsity basketball game versus Indian Valley.
The booster club will auction off 15 two-foot subs and 15 one-foot subs, and anyone who has been present for this time-honored event knows there aren’t any inexpensive subs on the bidding block, but that isn’t the main purpose as bidders annually show their unending support for Hiland students striving to do their very best in the classroom.
On the day of the auction, volunteers gather and assemble the subs, setting the stage for a post-game bidding war as area businesses and individuals show their support for the students heading off to college and recognize the commitment and effort put forth by the graduating seniors.
Visiting fans are always amazed at how each sub hits the auction block and immediately goes soaring past the $100 mark, heading to the $200 level and sometimes eclipsing $300 and more.
These generous bids eventually turn into scholarships that have helped support Hiland students in their efforts to get a degree. Oftentimes, that has resulted in many of them going to school and returning home, where they in turn reinvest in the community.
While it’s always fun to be there and bid in person, there are alternatives for those who can’t make the game.
“If you are unable to attend the auction and you would like to participate, please contact any one of the board members and they will assist you in bidding,” said Melissa Sprang, booster club treasurer. “We thank you (in advance) all very much for your support.”
