HBA, others break ground on home to benefit CAMO

In Honduras, where access to basic medical services is limited, the Home Builders Association of Wayne & Holmes Counties and Central American Medical Outreach have partnered to address the healthcare needs of disadvantaged individuals.
On May 8 HBA members and nonmembers alike came together to break ground on a new home that will be showcased in the 2024 Parade of Homes, scheduled Sept. 20-22 and Sept. 27-29. The entirety of the proceeds from the sale of the house will go toward CAMO’s mission of providing essential medical services to the underprivileged in Honduras.
The new home is located at 8664 Akron Road in Marshallville.
Twelve years ago Dennis Horst, then a member of the board of directors at Central American Medical Outreach, envisioned building a spec home and donating the profits to CAMO. This idea took a significant step forward in December 2023 when Horst approached CAMO ready to fund and construct the home.
With the project approved by the board, Horst and CAMO Director Kathy Tschiegg began rallying volunteers, purchasing land and securing donated materials. On Feb. 13 the two presented their vision to the HBA, showcasing a video of CAMO’s 30 years of work. Their presentation resonated, and a few days later, they received the news that exceeded their expectations: The HBA board approved the project.
Michael Downs of MD Custom Builders agreed to lead this groundbreaking initiative in partnership with CAMO. In just three months, both members and nonmembers of the HBA committed to donating labor and materials for the construction of the home.
CAMO is grateful to all the HBA members and nonmembers who are contributing their time, resources and expertise to the project.
