Fair sales support 4-H members and community

The annual 2024 fair sales including the large animal, small animal and dairy product sale brought in a total of $1,549,247.45 during fair week. Not only do the sales benefit the youth involved, but also the local food bank. Auctioneer Steve Cronebaugh pointed out one company that donates all the animals they purchase in Tuscarawas County and at other county fair sales. Other buyers donate as well.
The 2024 Tuscarawas County Market Livestock Auction was held Thursday at the fair, beginning at noon. There were 86 steers sold for a total of $565,244.45.
The grand champion steer shown by Kenny Welch of the Buckhorn Bandits was purchased by Kimble Company for $10 per pound. The reserve champion steer was shown by Reide Black of the Buckhorn Bandits and was purchased by WM Commercial Roofing LLC for $10 per pound.
The grand champion bred and fed steer shown by Lillian Sproul of Boots and Chutes was purchased by Wendy’s of Tuscarawas County for $7 per pound. The reserve champion bred and fed was shown by Jillian Welch of the Buckhorn Bandits and was purchased by MRE Services Inc. for $7.50 per pound.
There was a total of 35 lambs sold. The lamb sale totaled $51,691.
The grand champion lamb shown by Allison Kendle of Above and Beyond was purchased by D & J Sales and Service, Fisher Farm Service, Kaufman Realty & Auctions, The Carrollton Farmers Exchange Co. Inc., McDonnell Farms, Hamilton Insurance, and Kim Davis Insurance Agency for $70 per pound. The reserve champion lamb was shown by Marshall Miller of Buckhorn Buckeyes and purchased by Endsley Insurance Agency LLC for $22.50 per pound.
There was a total of 297 hogs sold. The hog sale totaled $653,800.
The grand champion hog shown by Kayne Ellwood of 4-H Jr. Achievers was purchased by Dover Phila Federal Credit Union for $20 per pound. The reserve champion hog shown by Jonathon Domer of 4-H Jr. Achievers was purchased by WM Commercial Roofing LLC for $18 per pound.
The grand total of the large animal sale was $1,269,554.48.
The Tuscarawas County 4-H Junior Fair Dairy Product Sale was held Friday. A total of 40 items were sold including decorative baskets, wooden stands and a variety of dairy products. The grand total of the dairy sale was $123,300. Youth who show dairy projects at the fair were in attendance and encouraged bidders with clapping and cheering.
The Tuscarawas County 4-H Junior Fair Small Animal Sale was held Saturday afternoon. The total of the small animal sale was $147,458.
A total of 112 chicken entries sold for $66,650. The grand champion pen of chickens was shown by Jackson Burkholder of 4-H Pioneers and purchased for $1,200 by TCM Waterproofing LLC. The reserve champion was shown by Lincoln Flinner of Buckhorn Buckeyes and sold for $1,250 to Pine Lawn Farm LLC.
A total of 21 duck entries sold for $8,800. The grand champion pen of ducks was shown by Lucy Angelo of 4-H Pioneers and was sold for $650 to Schlabach Painting. The reserve champion pen of ducks was shown by Jacoby Cannon of Stone Creek Peas and Carrots for $1,000 to Novelis Uhrichsville Works.
A total of 40 turkey entries sold for $21,300. The grand champion turkey was shown by Gabriel Stockert of 4-H Pioneers and sold to Lucky Tree Service for $1,300. The reserve champion turkey was shown by Ashley Zurfley of the Happy Homesteaders and sold for $800 to HRN Construction.
A total of 21 rabbit entries sold for $10,325. The grand champion pen of rabbits was shown by Madalyn Meck of Prime Cuts for $700 to Safe Clean Maid Service. The reserve champion pen of rabbits was shown by Jazlynn Green of Prime Cuts and was sold for $1,000 to Bliss Veterinary Services and R.J. Wright and Sons LTD.
A total of 47 goats were sold for $34,983. The grand champion goat was shown by Kortlynn Miller of Angel Valley and sold for $13 per pound to Fresh Off the Farm LLC. The reserve champion goat was shown by Olivia Sproul of Boots and Chutes for $16 per pound to Fresh off the Farm LLC.
The Tuscarawas County Agricultural Society board president was pleased with the 2024 fair overall. In his more than 25 years working on the fair board, there was much to be happy about.
“I’m going to put this fair in the top two and maybe the best one yet,” Reb Billman said.
“The weather was fantastic; attendance is great. Participation from the community, the businesses, sponsors, was the most ever I believe.”
