The launch of Hans’ Place at the newly renamed Broad Run Corner is more than just a run-of-the-mill opening of an eatery. The full-service restaurant, which features a winery and tasting room, pays homage to the Schindler family’s beloved patriarch, who died in 2004.

“We always had in the back of our minds that if we did an expansion of our business, it would be called Hans’ Place after him,” said Chad Schindler, who runs the operation with his wife Jody and mother Nancy. “We finally got an opportunity to expand on our wine production, which grew into a tasting room and a restaurant with a patio and music.”

In keeping with the family business of cheese-making and wine-making, the restaurant’s fare will be cheese-centric, featuring items that complement the wines. Those looking for a nibble may opt for cheese and meat boards, salads or appetizers such as fried cheese. Those with a more robust appetite can sink their teeth into lasagna, grilled cheese sandwiches or a Hans’ Ultimate Burger.

“It’s a burger with macaroni and cheese stuffed inside it, cheddar cheese on the outer part and special sauce,” Jody Schindler said.

On opening day visitors will have their first opportunity to sip an off-dry white wine called Diamond Glitz. It will be offered along with other favorites from Swiss Heritage Winery, which is part of the Schindlers’ Broad Run Corner, so dubbed because of its convergence at Broad Run Dairy Road and Old Route 39. It also is the name of the building that houses Hans’ Place.

The new restaurant offers seating for more than 100 on the patio and 60 indoors.

“The three words we’re homing in on are explore, savor and unwind,” Jody Schindler said. “Those words explain our wide variety of food, excellent wine, relaxing atmosphere and live music every Saturday night.”

The family’s business traces its roots back to 1977 when the elder Schindler bought the business after many years of working there as a Swiss cheesemaker. Through the years Hans and Nancy expanded the operation several times to include a larger retail area for cheese and a boutique featuring curtains and unique gift items such as pictures, jewelry, clothing and slippers. They installed a tasting bar for the wine Hans crafted. His son makes the wine now.

Broad Run boasts several honors. Among them are two stints as Ohio Grand Champion Cheese Maker and platinum awards in the Monterey International Wine Competition for the sweet wine, Dog Gone Good. Deemed the Native American red class winner, Dog Gone Good beat out the competition, most of which were California wineries.

Chad Schindler invites folks to celebrate the grand opening of Hans’ Place and to return frequently for an exceptional experience.

“It’s in a wooded area, and the atmosphere is great,” he said. “There are viewing windows into the winery from inside the seating area, so that’s a little different from what other places offer.”

No doubt Dad would be proud.

Hans’ Place at Broad Run Corner is located at 6011 Old Route 39 NW in Dover.
