Dover singer gains traction in Nashville

Kami Huff is a singer with traction, quickly gaining a fan following for the songs she has written and recorded in Nashville studios while maintaining a busy calendar of appearances in the area. Huff is just 17 years old and a student at Dover High School.
“I guess I’ve loved music since I was very young,” Huff said. “I started taking piano lessons at age 3. My parents are both musically inclined — they were in band when they were younger — and so is my grandmother, who sings in church.”
It was after joining the choir in middle school that Huff began to reveal a real talent for singing.
“I loved singing,” Huff said, “and I liked to write poetry. I wrote a lot of poems, and then in middle school, I started sitting down at the piano and setting the poems to music, just to see what would happen. It was just like that. I had a song I’d written.”
She began performing at age 13 when another artist unexpectedly invited her onstage to sing along. In the fall of last year, Huff stepped out onto the stage as a solo act.
“Now I have a full schedule of gigs this summer,” she said.
Her 2024 appearances began with a set at the Dover Canal Festival. She will sing at festivals and events until school begins again in the fall.
While much of her act is made up of original material, she also now incorporates covers of other country and pop songs to fill out her three-hour performances.
She describes her talent as a God-given gift, and she also has worked with vocal coaches. “I have to give a shoutout to Ms. (Shawna) Hinkle, our choir director at Dover. She has been a lot of help for me,” she said.
Huff is currently training with Shannon Mitchell of Dover.
Huff plans to attend West Liberty University to study nursing but will carry a music production minor. “I want to learn the studio side of it. I am going to keep performing through college and see where it takes me,” she said.
Huff is no stranger to a professional recording studio. Paying careful attention to her social media accounts, a producer reached out to her to see if she would be interested in recording in Nashville. After some careful checking by her family to ensure she wasn’t jumping into a scam, Huff found herself recording at OmniSound Studios, which has seen sessions by some of the top recording artists in the business.
“I’ve actually been to Nashville to record twice,” Huff said. “They take what I’ve recorded and turn it into magic. The music is very well produced.”
She also has had professional photographs made in Nashville to help further her nascent singing career. From starting performing solo less than a year ago to a booked summer schedule, it would seem Huff is a singer with a future. She has auditioned for the television talent show “The Voice” and is in the process of submitting an audition for “American Idol.”
