Dover fire chief to present Dover Scenes Through the Years program

Russ Volkert, Dover fire chief and local historian, will present a program titled Dover Scenes Through the Years on Thursday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., Dover.
During the program Volkert will talk about the images on many of the traffic light control boxes around the city of Dover. The objective of this project is twofold: Project leaders wanted to make history visible and accessible to the public in a low-impact way, and they wanted to tone down the utilitarian appearance of the large metal enclosures.
Volkert will explain that the different images are intended for different purposes: More current images are intended to stir memories of residents who can relate directly to things and places as they existed within their lifetime while other images are to show things in the deeper past that few may even have an awareness of and that were a part of the area and the community as it developed and grew over the last century and a half.
“We are so fortunate that Russ Volkert is willing to share his extensive knowledge about this project,” said Sherrel Rieger, adult program specialist. “We will be able to share memories of places around town and learn about things that existed before our time. It will be an educational and entertaining evening.”
