Zoar Council was informed on Feb. 13 that composting service to Lawrence Township residents may be discontinued.

At the Feb. 13 meeting of Zoar Council, members heard from Mayor Tom Klingaman that the compost service provided by the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Joint Solid Waste Management District may be discontinued.

The compost service is located in Lawrence Township, which maintains a drop-off location outside the township building at 10867 Industrial Parkway NW in Bolivar.

Council member David Irwin said the village is seeking bids for a mowing contract. Bids must be received by March 8 and should be sent to zoar16@yahoo.com.

Irwin also opened discussion regarding cemetery contracts as costs are currently not being covered by rates charged. Costs will remain the same through the end of 2024 but will need to be increased in 2025. In addition, Irwin reported having cleaned catch basins on Third Street and at Michael Lane and Main Street.

Reports to council

In the safety committee report, Klingaman reported having received requests from several residents regarding police patrol and asking if the officer can park at various locations in the village rather than the same one all the time.

The planning commission reported having approved and issued a driveway report for a residence on Second Street. The commission also requested a village revenue report for 2023, which will be provided.

The event center committee met recently and discussed the need for signage on the building to help increase rentals. Council member Mark Gaynor will obtain signage samples and set up a separate email address for building rentals.

Council approved the purchase of a 4-by-six-foot American flag that was not included in the last order. Council approved up to $100 for the purchase.

Zoar Village Council meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Zoar Village Hall and Event Center meeting room. All meetings are open to the public.
