Council continuing to file grant applications for new park funding

At the Feb. 22 meeting of Mineral City Village Council, council member Rick Cain spoke about several funding efforts being pursued for the new village park. Cain said the committee will apply for a TAP grant through the Ohio Department of Transportation, which funds projects aimed at providing transportation alternatives.
Cain also said he is waiting to hear from the Rosenberry Foundation on a grant application for playground equipment. Discussion was tabled about the need to remove the old park pavilion after it was suggested someone may be interested in purchasing and removing it.
In a related matter, council passed a resolution authorizing Mayor Laurie Green to sign documentation for a grant application from the Ohio Mid-Eastern Government’s Association that would fund a walking trail around the new park.
Upon a recommendation by Street Supervisor Sam Moore, council approved removing a faulty guardrail near the park area because the ground has been leveled off.
Additional approvals
Council authorized an expenditure of $372 per month for a 60-month lease with Silco Fire and Security to upgrade security at Village Hall. The package will include alarms, a camera system, monitoring and maintenance, and a $1 buyout option at the end of the lease.
Council approved a resolution allowing the fiscal officer to establish a fund for receipt of funds from a pass-through grant for the fire department. Pass-through funding is money granted by the federal government to states for distribution where needed.
Memorial for Mosely family
Cain reported he and council member Darla Daugherty recently met with members of the Mosely family to discuss a memorial garden or standing memorial to honor their son Wyatt Mosely and all of those who passed away in the Tusky Valley bus accident. Cain said several ideas were discussed, and he and Daugherty will conduct further planning and explore fundraising options.
Local fundraisers
The fire department will hold its first Frozen Food and Grocery Auction since before the pandemic on March 2 at 3 p.m. at the fire station. A concession stand will be open, and a portion of all auction proceeds will benefit the Mineral City Fire Department.
After two drawings in the library’s Queen of Hearts fundraiser, Nill reported the pot at the time had reached $1,220. The pot will continue to grow until a winner draws the queen of hearts. The winner will split the pot 50/50 with the library. Drawings take place every Friday at 7 p.m. at the library, and the public is invited to attend.
In other matters
In his streets report, Moore said he received a complaint from a resident about another resident parking on the sidewalk and driving through a neighbor’s yard. Nill said while no-parking signs have been posted, he will look into the ordinance further to see what else can be done.
Moore requested and council approved paying the part-time street worker to help with village cleanup.
Nill asked the zoning committee to close up an open doorway on an empty property and bill the owner for the costs.
Council member Mandy Lake said the village-wide spring cleanup date has been set for April 13.
Nill reported getting estimates and looking into grant funding for the deck and posts on the front porch of the library.
Mineral City Council meets the second and fourth Thursday each month at 7 p.m. All meetings are open to the public.
