In tribute to both veterans and a cherished student, the Wayne County Schools Career Center has a flag park, dedicated in May 2023, at the entrance of the school.

The legacy of Eric J. Miller carries on in a student's dedication to honor career center veterans with brick pavers. Triway graduate and career center student Leatha Perman said Miller was super funny, and everyone loved him.

As one of the remaining criminal justice students who knew Miller, Perman felt she had to carry on his idea and work to ensure anyone who attends the career center and serves in the military is honored with a brick paver. Perman’s uncle Marke Moore attended the career center in 1986 and served in the U.S. Army. Perman had the honor of placing his brick in the flag park.

She said her uncle’s military service is one of her driving forces for taking the flag park on as her project during her final year at the career center, and as she prepares to leave the career center, she plans to continue helping with the flag park because the project is close to her heart.

The creation of the PFC Eric J. Miller Memorial Veterans Flag Park was a collaborative effort spearheaded by former student Eric Miller and the 2023 WCSCC criminal justice class. The flag park serves as a permanent tribute on the school grounds, featuring a display of flags, landscaping and commemorative bricks. The bricks that surround the park honor WCSCC alumni who served the country. Each brick paver includes the alumni's name, graduation year and branch of service.

Any WCSCC alumni wishing to have a brick at the flag park should email Warren Caskey, criminal justice instructor, at wcaskey@wcscc.org.
