Breitenbach Wine Cellars of Dover won medals at The Indy International Wine Competition. This is one of the largest competitions in the nation. Breitenbach competed with over 2,000 wines from 40 states and 12 countries. Breitenbach Tawny Port won Double Gold. Only 8 percent of wines were awarded Double Gold medals. Breitenbach Tawny Port recently won Concordance Gold at The Ohio Wine Competition. Part of the vinification for this wine is that it was blended and fermented in newly used Jim Beam whiskey barrels. The wine is then aged Solera style for six to seven years. Earning a gold medal at the Indy International is Green Shoes. This is a wine with 90 percent cabernet sauvignon, 5 percent merlot and 5 percent cabernet franc grapes. This medium-bodied dry red is an approachable dinner wine with a fruit forward palate and soft tannins. This is the second gold medal this year for Green Shoes.Another Breitenbach gold medal went to Drier style Gewurztraminer. The residual sugar for this wine is about 1.5 percent, enough to retain the lively flavors and spiciness of the gewurztraminer grape. Breitenbach Wine Cellars is known for their natural fruit wines. Cherry won a silver medal. Blackberry and Red Raspberry each won bronze medals. To learn more about Breitenbach wines, come to the winery for a guided tour.
