The Zoar Community Association has acquired the Bimeler Cabin, marking an important milestone in the preservation of Historic Zoar Village’s heritage.

Plans are underway to restore the home, which is believed to be the very first structure built in the village in 1817. Restoration efforts will ensure the home’s structural integrity and honor its original character and appearance while transforming it into a museum and event venue.

“This is a significant moment for our community,” said Jon Elsasser, ZCA president. “As stewards of Zoar’s heritage, we recognize the profound significance of this historic structure and are committed to ensuring its preservation for generations to come.”

ZCA purchased the home from the Gus Ruetenik family, which owned and maintained it for nearly a century. The Bimeler Cabin served as the original residence of Joseph Bimeler, the first leader of the Society of Separatists that founded Zoar. It also was used as the Separatists’ first church and meeting house.

Those wishing to make a contribution toward the Bimeler Cabin restoration and subsequent maintenance can do so online at www.historiczoarvillage.com/join-donate and via GoFundMe at gofund.me/ca841d0a. Checks payable to Zoar Community Association also may be sent to Historic Zoar Village, P.O. Box 621, Zoar, OH 44697.
