3 individuals, 1 relay earn All-Ohio at state track and field
Several locals competed at the state track and field tournaments June 2-3 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
Three individuals and one relay earned All-Ohio honors to lead the area state qualifiers.
Below is a breakdown of how local athletes fared during the two-day event.
Division II
West Holmes’ Kyle Maltarich earned All-Ohio honors in the boys high jump by finishing tied for fourth with a jump of 6-feet-2. The junior cleared the first two heights, 6 feet and 6-2, on his first two attempts and then failed to clear 6-4 on all three of his attempts.
WH’s Laney Duff finished 17th in the girls high jump with a mark of 5 feet. The senior cleared her second attempt at 5 feet and then failed to clear all three attempts at 5-2.
The 4x400 relay team of Jasmine Giauque, Noelle Smith, Daphne Alexander and Cierra Miller also competed for the Lady Knights, placing 17th in prelims with a time of 4:13.69. The top nine teams advanced to finals.
Div. III
Loudonville’s Tess Shultz earned a spot on the podium by finishing fourth in the 1,600. The sophomore stayed toward the front of the pack during the entire race, crossing the finish line in 5:04.20 to earn All-Ohio accolades.
Garaway’s 4x800 relay team of Jessie Johnson, Kenadi Yoder, Ellie Goehring and Meghan Schwartz earned All-Ohio honors by placing eighth in 9:49.26.
Schwartz and Johnson also competed in the 800. Schwartz, a junior, finished seventh in 2:18.38 to snag a spot on the podium for the second consecutive day. Johnson, a senior, placed 13th in 2:22.70.
Loudonville’s Corri Vermilya competed in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles but failed to advance to the finals in either event. The junior placed 14th in the highs (16.02) and 17th in the lows (48.53) in prelims.
Kenzie Cutlip competed in the long jump for the Lady Redbirds. The senior finished 15th with a jump of 16-3.
Loudonville’s Braden Carr cleared 13 feet to finish tied for 11th in the boys pole vault. The freshman cleared the first three heights — 11-6, 12-6 and 13 feet — without a miss and then missed all three of his attempts at 13-6.
