Chamber outlines fundraising and events for community initiatives including July festival

Members of the West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce met Feb. 24 to review upcoming events, approve reports, and discuss fundraising plans for community initiatives including fireworks and scholarships.

Organizers reported strong participation in the recent quarter auction fundraiser, with additional gatherings planned.

Planning for the annual fireworks display is underway, with costs estimated at about $12,500. Sponsorship letters have been distributed to businesses and residents. Members discussed additional fundraising ideas including a possible gun raffle in partnership with a local business and a grocery shopping spree raffle through Buehler’s.

Community sales sign-ups are open through Tuesday, April 28 at noon, with forms available at several local locations including Statements by Shannon, the West Lafayette Library and JB’s.

Discussion on forming a snow removal committee was tabled for a future meeting.

The chamber recently purchased tables and chairs, with some consideration given to repurposing items for use at the community eat stand. Members also discussed upgrading lighting at the facility.

Preparations are ongoing for the annual homecoming festival, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, July 23-25. Albanese Amusements will return to provide rides. Organizers are seeking new partners for food events including the possibility of involvement from the local FFA chapter.

Entertainment for the festival will include multiple musical acts and returning performers. A talent show also is being considered. U.S. Rep. Troy Balderson will serve as grand marshal in recognition of America’s 250th birthday.

Additional discussions included promoting chamber businesses on its website and exploring ways to expand homecoming including potentially moving the parade to Saturday to increase attendance.
