This year’s River View Lady Bears arrive with something head coach Willie Infante hasn’t had in recent memory — a full roster of varsity experience and a score to settle.

“They did not enjoy how last year went,” Infante said of his returning players. “They all want to show what can be accomplished.”

Every single returning player steps into 2026 carrying a full year of varsity experience — no rookies or learning on the fly in moments that matter.

“Although we have more experience, the growth on the field will show as we move along in the season,” Infante said.

The collective experience is the backbone of everything River View wants to accomplish this season. Leadership isn’t being asked of one or two players; it’s being demanded of the entire returning roster.

“Mental errors don’t go in the scorebook but can change the momentum of a game in an instant,” Infante said.

Collective leadership means everyone is accountable for what happens before the moment, not just during it. River View definitely wants to approach with an anticipatory mindset rather than reactive. Players are being trained to think ahead, see situations coming and be ready before the moment arrives.

It’s a small adjustment with potentially enormous results, and that standard doesn’t soften for anyone new to the program.

Five freshmen join the varsity squad this spring. Though the jump from junior high to varsity is a wake-up call for any athlete, Infante likes what he sees.

“They’re willing to work hard, listen and put the time into becoming a better version of themselves,” Infante said.

They won’t be carrying the load, but they won’t be passengers either. This group wants to compete, which compliments the mentality Infante is building.

Infante said regardless of record, "This team is developing and maintaining a sense of team and getting 1% better each and every day we’re together."

Though the Lady Bears have already faced a little bit of adversity with some injuries, the Bears are on the mend, and the trajectory is pointing up. Depth and experience in the pitching staff will help guide this squad for the long haul.

“Every pitcher will see some time in the circle,” Infante said.

River View softball is not sneaking up on anyone; they’re walking in through the front door — experienced, motivated, disciplined and hungry to make last season’s ending feel like the beginning of a new era.
