Ridgewood students win essay contest
Graham Miller and Nolan McCombs honored by Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities for essays on inclusion
Ridgewood Local Schools recognized Graham Miller and Nolan McCombs for being named winners in the Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ annual essay contest.
As part of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, the contest invites students in third grade through sixth grade to reflect on inclusion and accessibility within their communities. This year’s prompt asked students to consider how they would respond if a friend who uses a wheelchair could not access playground equipment at a community park.
Miller and McCombs demonstrated insight, empathy and a commitment to inclusion through their responses. Their work highlights the importance of ensuring all individuals — regardless of ability — feel welcome, supported and able to participate fully in community activities.
The Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities hosts this annual essay contest, along with a coloring contest for kindergarten through second grade, each March to promote awareness and celebrate inclusion. The initiative encourages students to think critically about how to make their communities more accessible and welcoming for everyone.
