On March 16, the Highland Foundation for Educational Excellence Board of Trustees received a $1 million gift from longtime Highland supporter Bob Kelly to establish the “Bob Kelly (’64) and Becky Kelly (’69)” Fund, dedicated to expanding student academic and enrichment programs within Highland Local Schools. The gift was presented during the regular meeting of the Highland Local School District Board of Education.
The contribution is the largest in the foundation’s history and will significantly expand opportunities for teachers and students to pursue meaningful learning experiences across the district.
Kelly said he chose to make the gift publicly in hopes of encouraging others who care about Highland’s future to invest in the continued excellence of its schools. He emphasized that strong schools are vital to a strong community and expressed hope that others will support opportunities that help Highland students thrive.
“This extraordinary gift is both a powerful vote of confidence in Highland’s educators and students and an inspiring example of community leadership,” said Theresa Wright, executive director of the Highland Foundation for Educational Excellence. “For more than 25 years, our donors have helped bring new ideas and expanded opportunities to life in Highland classrooms. Mr. Kelly’s generosity will allow us to build on that work while reminding all of us how important continued community support is to the success of our schools.”
“Bob Kelly’s impact on the Highland community is truly immeasurable,” said Highland Superintendent Catherine Aukerman. “A lifelong resident and proud graduate of Highland High School, Bob and his wife Becky shared a deep and enduring connection to this community. This extraordinary gift is another reflection of his commitment to investing in the future of Highland students.”
The Highland Foundation for Educational Excellence is a community-driven nonprofit dedicated to strengthening Highland Local Schools. For more than two decades, the foundation has partnered with teachers, administrators and donors to fund educational opportunities beyond what public funding alone can provide. Through grants and scholarships, more than $2.5 million has supported programs that promote curiosity, creativity and academic excellence.
Recent initiatives have included literacy programs such as One District One Book, STEM and hands-on science experiences, performing arts residencies, intercultural learning opportunities, and student media and technology programs.
The newly established Kelly Fund expands the foundation’s ability to support academic and enrichment programs across Highland schools while reinforcing the importance of continued community investment in education.
