The New Directions EmpowHer event, originally scheduled for this past Friday at the Lowry Center on the campus of Kenyon College, was unexpectedly canceled after severe weather swept through Knox County, causing widespread power outages.

The event, which was set to bring together community members, supporters, and advocates for an evening of inspiration and connection, had been planned in the Lowry Center. However, strong winds moved through the county shortly before the program was scheduled to begin, knocking out electricity to much of the campus and the surrounding community. Due to the resulting power loss and related safety concerns, the college made the difficult decision to cancel the program and close down the building for the evening.

Despite the sudden change of plans, several attendees who had arrived before or shortly after the storm chose to remain for a short time and make the best of the unexpected circumstances. Guests gathered informally, enjoying food and refreshments, browsing vendor tables, and sharing conversation and fellowship. Though the full program could not proceed as planned, the brief gathering reflected the strong sense of community and support that the EmpowHer event is known for each year.

New Directions Executive Director Lindsay Lamp speaks to guests who arrived for the EmpowHer event Friday despite the wind storm that raged through Knox County.

Before the evening concluded, Executive Director Lindsay Lamp offered a short welcome to those present and expressed appreciation for the community’s patience and understanding. Lamp briefly introduced the vision behind this year’s event theme, “Vogue Presence: Limited Edition,” which celebrates confidence, individuality, and the unique strength each woman brings to her community. She explained that while the full program, including speakers and presentations, could not take place due to the outage, additional details and announcements will be shared once the event is rescheduled.

Organizers confirmed that the EmpowHer event will be rescheduled soon, allowing the community to fully experience the program that had been planned. Those who purchased tickets for Friday’s event will have their tickets honored at the rescheduled event, and additional information regarding the new date and time will be announced soon.

New Directions expressed gratitude to everyone who braved the weather, as well as to the vendors, volunteers, and community partners who helped prepare for the evening. The organization also thanked Kenyon College staff for their assistance and understanding as the safety decision was made during the power outage.

The EmpowHer event continues to be an important gathering that celebrates resilience, empowerment, and connection among women throughout the community. While the weather created an unexpected pause, organizers remain excited to bring the full experience to attendees when the event is rescheduled.
