The Mount Vernon girls' wrestling team opened the season Sunday at the Highland Lady Scot Invitational. Four wrestlers took home hardware for the Jackets.

The Mount Vernon girls’ wrestling team picked up four individual pieces of hardware in the opening tournament of the season. The Jackets’ Luci Parker, Mahayley Laverick, Alivia Zimmerman and Khadija Ndow all placed in the Lady Scot Invitational, held Sunday at Highland.

Parker, a freshman, was the top finisher for MV, placing fifth in the 100-pound weight class at Highland. After getting pinned in her first high school match, Parker bounced back to win her next two matches, both via pin. She lost her final match to finish fifth overall.

Zimmerman, who qualified for district competition a year ago, placed sixth overall at 145. The sophomore opened her tournament with two straight wins — one by pin and the other a thrilling 6-3 sudden victory match. She was then pinned in the semifinal and then forfeited her final two matches to finish sixth.

Laverick (135 pounds) and Ndow (170) both finished seventh in their respective weight classes. Laverick picked up a 7-5 victory, a pinfall win in 0:45 and a 4-1 SV win. Ndow had three pins (1:43, 1:40 and 0:25) to finish seventh.

Jessie Bals-Perez (110), Evelyn Martinez (120) and Joy Morman (190) also participated for MV, with Martinez picking up one match victory.

Centerburg and Fredericktown also participated in the tournament.

The Trojans had just one wrestler participate — Emma Fisher — who had a pinfall victory to finish seventh at 140 pounds.

Fredericktown brought six wrestlers to Highland, and were led by Truth Yarman, who finished seventh at 120 pounds. Yarman picked up three pins (1:16, 0:42 and 2:54) to pick up the seventh-place trophy.

Addison Hess (100), Kerrigan Murray-Brooks (120), Kristina Meszarova (135), Anna Miller (155) and Ruthlynn Mejia-Evener (235) also participated, with Murray-Brooks and Meszarosova both picking up wins.
