Yellow Jackets honor seniors, sweep Highland at Colonial Lanes
Mount Vernon bowlers win on senior day; basketball and wrestling squads also notch victories

The Mount Vernon bowling teams honored its seniors Saturday, then went out and beat Highland during a match at Colonial Lanes.
The Jackets honored seniors Griffin Beach, Jhaxom Byron, James Coburn and Addyson Dusenberry prior to the match.
The boys' then went out and dismantled the Scots, winning the match 2,232-1,901. Andrew Primm led the Jackets with a 447 series (234-213). Beach was next at 420 (176-244), followed by Bryce Hollenback at 407 (243-164). Byron rolled games of 200-175 and Coburn shot 131-156.
The girls also sent out their lone senior — Dusenberry — on a high note with a 1,523-1,431 victory over the Scots.
Dusenberry led the team with a 303 series (115-188). Haylie Watts fired games of 141 and 122, while Dani Bumpus had games of 136 and 122.
On Jan. 23, the boys’ cruised past Licking Valley, 2,241-1,904.

Primm led the Jackets with games of 202-240. Hollenback added games of 208-213, while Beach shot 225-193.
Girls’ basketball
The Mount Vernon girls’ basketball team won a pair of games
this week.
The Yellow Jackets stung host Heath, 52-33, in a Licking
County League contest on Jan. 21.
Isla Graham led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points. Maddy
Jones added 11 points, while Emma Hall, Gabby Beck and Callie Swanson had five
points each. Kendall Melton and Lillian Worth chipped in four points each.
On Jan. 24, the Jackets cruised to a 47-37 victory over
Licking Valley.
Beck led MV with 22 points. Graham added 12, while Hall had
five, Kate Marhefka four and Jones three.
Boys’ basketball
The Mount Vernon boys’ basketball team
slipped past Licking Valley, 46-45, on Jan. 22.
Trace Beck led the Yellow Jackets with
15 points and seven rebounds. Justus Shaw added 15 points, five rebounds and
three assists, while Trenton Wells had nine points and four assists.
Boys’ wrestling
The Mount Vernon Varsity Orange boys’ wrestling team
captured the team title at the Robin Drumm Classic at Heath on Jan. 24.
The Yellow Jackets scored 181 points to win the event,
besting runner-up Northmor, which had 170.5
MV did it up and down the lineup as eight wrestlers finished
in the top four, led by Carter Hill’s title at 175 pounds. Hill won all three
of his matches via pin, including a championship pin of Phoenix Hayslip of
Licking Valley in just 1:12.
Gabe Kiser (106 pounds), Tye Thomas (132), Brandon Jaynes
(157) and Jude Kirk (165) all had runner-up finishes.
Kiser won one match by pin but fell 13-4 in the championship
match. Thomas also had one pinfall before losing by pin. Jaynes had a pin but
lost via pin. And Kirk also had a pin but lost by a pin.
Jaxon Plumly (138), Preston Hempfield (150) and Fritz
Johnson (285) all finished third, while Noah Maleszewski (144) was fifth and
Keagan Leasure (120) finished sixth.
