For many years local businesses and organizations have understood the value of a good education, and in doing so, the community has supported the hard work area high school students invest into preparing for their next phase of life through higher education.

Recently, one of those students received a major reward for their willingness to keep their nose to the grindstone.

Each year the Pomerene Health Foundation awards a one-time $4,000 scholarship to assist a local high school senior or college/university student who is pursuing a healthcare career.

The student must have parents employed by Pomerene Hospital or Health Professionals of Holmes County Inc. After reviewing this year’s applications, the Pomerene Health Foundation has awarded Tate Amicone with the $4,000 scholarship.

There are several criteria that must be met in the application process to be considered for this award. The student must be accepted or enrolled into a four-year or two/three-year technical school in a healthcare-related field, have a cumulative high school GPA of 3.25, a minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT of 1,000, submit high school or college transcripts, provide one letter of recommendation and submit a 200-word essay.

After reviewing each application for academic excellence, financial need, ACT/SAT scores, and extracurricular activities/community involvement and other achievements, Amicone was chosen to receive the scholarship.

Amicone will attend the University of Mount Union and major in psychology. He graduated from Garaway High School this past year, where he was ranked 18th in his class. Amicone had an ACT score of 25, a 3.76 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society.

The Pomerene Health Foundation and Pomerene Hospital members invite the general public to join them in congratulating Amicone.
