Hispanic Heritage Celebration coming to the market
The Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market will host a Hispanic Heritage Celebration.

The Tuscarawas Valley Farmers Market will host a Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Wednesday, Aug. 9 from 3-7 p.m. at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds in Dover.

The community is invited to come experience Hispanic culture through demonstrations, food and music. The event will be held in conjunction with National Farmers Market Week, which is celebrated each year during the first full week of August and highlights the role farmers markets play in the nation’s food system.

From 5-7 p.m. watch Kimberly demonstrate a traditional Guatemalan weaving technique. She will have weavings available for purchase such as huipil (blouses) in addition to items brought from her village in Guatemala, like faja (belts), corte (skirts), cinta (headbands), sandals and small bags.

At 5 p.m. attend the cooking demo inside the Clover Café with Elena, who will show participants how to make chuchitos — small Guatemalan tamales made with corn dough. Free samples will be offered to those who attend the cooking demo.

Students from the Adelante Arts Camp will perform live music beginning at 5 p.m. The Adelante Arts Camp is a summer arts program that tells the stories of local Hispanic students through a variety of artistic and cultural forms to celebrate their community and culture in Tuscarawas County. Students learn from professional creatives to enhance their artistic experiences and gain confidence in their culture and identity.

Beyond the featured Hispanic demonstrators and musicians, shoppers also can pick up a meal from Three Lil Piggies BBQ, along with dessert from Schloneger’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream. Both food trucks will be set up onsite during the market. Additionally, after the conclusion of the performances by students from the Adelante Arts Camp, Ashlee Anne Wadley will perform music.
