Fire levy won’t increase taxes

Sugarcreek Village Council passed a resolution to place the renewal of a 3.5-mill, five-year fire levy used for operations on the Nov. 7 ballot. The resolution was passed by emergency at council’s Aug. 7 meeting. If the renewal levy is approved by voters, it would generate $96,462 annually. There is no increase in property taxes.
In another matter council agreed to place a sign warning motorists of an intersection at Ohio 93 and Ferman Ridge housing development. At the July 17 meeting, a discussion was held about motorists speeding on Ohio 93 and it is difficult to make a left turn out of Ferman Ridge. They discussed flashing lights; however, the cost would be about $2,200 to erect. It was noted it is difficult to exit Miller Avenue, which also is located adjacent Ohio 93.
Council also did the following:
—Heard the wall committee is discussing the green space at the intersection of Main Street and North Broadway to make it a grass area, seating, lights and other improvements at the site of the mural. Mayor Jeff Stutzman said the cost to honor those requests are not feasible. He said the sculpture honoring the Ohio Swiss Festival cheesemakers should be erected by October but not in time for the Ohio Swiss Festival to be held Sept. 28-30.
—Approved a bid of $141,600 to Bachtel of Massillon to install storm sewers on Boston Street.
—Agreed to make updates to the sidewalk ordinance.
—Approved Miriam Schlabach to take a paramedic course for the Sugarcreek Fire Department.
—Heard the traffic light at U.S. 39 at Dutch Valley has been changed to LED lights. Kevin Kaser, village administrator, said the traffic light is brighter and much easier to see.
