Fairless state report card discussed at BOE meeting

Julie Weyandt, Fairless Local Schools curriculum director, reported on the Fairless state report card during the Sept. 19 meeting held in the high school cafeteria.

Weyandt said Fairless School District earned a 3.5-star rating overall. Gap Closing earned a 5-star rating, which indicated how students are performing, and the graduation rate earned a 4-star rating with 95.9% of seniors graduating. Overall, the elementary earned a five-star rating and the middle school a 2.5-star rating. She also said 100% of the third-grade students were promoted to fourth grade for the 2023-24 school year.

Superintendent Mike Hearn reminded the board and residents the Hall of Honor induction will be held Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at Fairless High. On Nov. 4 at 6 p.m., the annual Night of Hope will be celebrated at St. Clement Hall in Navarre. The keynote speaker will be Renee Powell, and music will be provided by the group La Flavour.

The board also took the following action:

—Heard from Brett Long, soccer coach, requesting the board to consider a soccer field at the green space located at the former high school.

—Approved a contract with Child and Adolescent for service for three students at a rate of $155 per student per day for the 2023-24 school year.

—Approved fiscal year permanent appropriations of $37.3 million in all funds.

—Entered into a contract with Stark MHAR for mental health counselors at a cost of $6,630.

—Gave approval for a contract with the Stark County Educational Service Center to provide curriculum, a CARE Team and math coaching support at an estimated cost of $466,000 annually.

—Approved a foreign exchange student from France for the 2023-24 school year.

—Approved a contract with SPARCC from June 1, 2023, to July 31, 2024, to provide technology support at an estimated cost of $60,000.

—Accepted the resignation of Brandy Bishop, instructional aide, effective Aug. 16. The board then hired Bishop as a permanent substitute teacher at a rate of $100 per day. She also will serve as director of the Learning Commons and be paid at the Bachelor of Education rate of pay.

—Granted one-year probationary contracts to Tracy Kuemerle, five-hour cook, effective Aug. 22; Elyse Colucy, 5.7 hours, classified instructional aide, effective Aug. 22; Pam Gerig, front desk monitor, effective Sept. 5; and Jessica VanPelt, five-hour afternoon custodian, effective Sept. 5.

—Issued a one-year supplemental contract to Katherine Goodnight, student council, and Christa Jones, resident education mentor.

—Granted a one-year supplemental contract to nondistrict employee Justin Cline, head boys golf.

—Held an executive session to consider purchase of property — both real and personal tangible or intangible — or to consider sale of property. No action was taken.

Other information

The sophomore class was approved for early dismissal on Oct. 31, and the junior class will be dismissed Feb. 27 after the ACT testing.

The next board meeting will be held Oct. 17 at 6:15 p.m. in the high school cafeteria at 800 Seventh St. SE, Brewster.
