A lawsuit filed against Lawrence Township regarding the Fort Laurens Cemetery has been resolved, and the complaint has been withdrawn from the court. Don Ackerman, chairman of the Lawrence Township Board of Trustees, made the announcement during the July 13 board meeting.

The complaint had been filed by a local family, alleging additional family members were improperly buried in the same plot.

Reports

Ackerman said he has asked a resident to reach out to the Bolivar Army-Navy about taking over the Memorial Day parade and ceremony in the wake of the dissolution of the local American Legion Post.

Ackerman further advised the board that Dee Grossman, director of the Tuscarawas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, will attend the next meeting to discuss the matter of bed and breakfasts.

Trustee Matt Ritterbeck asked zoning inspector Ron Weekley to look into a request for street sweeping in Holly Heights.

Road Superintendent Chuck McNutt reported curb work has started on LaFont Circle, with paving scheduled for September. McNutt will reach out to refuse companies to ask drivers not to drive over the curbs.

McNutt also said he is requesting quotes for asphalting or crack and seal for the township parking lot and that new fire extinguishers need to be purchased for the township hall.

Weekley said a township resident is hosting a rodeo on their property. They have assured him they have plenty of parking available on their property and will not be parking on the township’s road.

Weekley reported the postponement of an auction of the former Masonic Lodge in Wilkshire Hills. He said the realtor was unaware the township has a 99-year lease on the 1.13 acres of land on which the lodge is situated.

Fiscal officer Ann Ackerman provided trustees with the quarterly revenue and appropriations reports and advised the board the Community Improvement Corporation will meet July 26 at 7 p.m. at the township hall.

Public comments

Victor Rodriguez, owner of Habanaros Tacos and Margaritas in Sugarcreek and El Pueblito Mexican Bistro in Dover, asked trustees to support his request to purchase a liquor license. Ohio’s Liquor Control Commission places limits on the number of liquor licenses that can exist in the same geographical area.

Rodriguez said if the liquor license is approved by the state, he may want to lease the building that currently housed the Pizza Hut in Wilkshire Hills. All three trustees said they would support the request, should it be approved by the state.

Voting

Trustees approved the application for a Holmes Lumber account and agreed to waive the sign fee for the nonprofit event, Sparks of Giving.

The Lawrence Township Board of Trustees meets the second and last Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Charles E. Lundenberger Hall, 10867 Industrial Parkway NW, Bolivar. All meetings are open to the public.
