Archaeology Day at WCHS to offer fun and education

The Wayne County Historical Society and The College of Wooster will co-host Archaeology Day on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the historical society’s campus, 546 E. Bowman St., Wooster. There will be a full schedule of events and plenty of activities for kids including a dig box or mock archaeological excavation. A food truck will be onsite all day. The event is free and open to the public.

Professor Olivia Navarro-Farr from The College of Wooster will share discoveries from an ancient Maya city. Professor Beth Derderian and Wooster students will demonstrate their skill with the atlatl, a device for throwing a spear or dart used by indigenous peoples, and the historical society’s Steve Kitchen will demonstrate flint napping.

There will be displays of artifacts from 1904 digs in Wayne, Holmes and Coshocton counties and from a 1967 College of Wooster dig at Pella in Jordan. Much of the material will be exhibited to the public for the first time. There also will be people on hand to date material brought in by visitors.
