The AAUW/Kiwanis Book Sale at the Wayne County Fairgrounds is an annual fall event that book lovers anticipate. To be able to have the sale, the clubs must collect book donations from the community all year long.

Recently, the drop-off location for used book donations moved. The clubs will take book donations every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the new location, the red barn behind the Zion Lutheran Church, 301 N. Market St., Wooster.

The Feb. 10 relocation of the donation site involved moving many tables and pallets, hundreds of empty storage boxes, and many boxes of donated books. Due to an outstanding turnout of volunteers from the Wooster branch of the American Association of University Women and the Kiwanis Club of Wooster, the task was accomplished in under three hours. Over 50 volunteers from the Wooster organizations were aided by coach Reid Delaney and the Wooster High School boys lacrosse team. Trucks and other moving equipment were provided by Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties.

“I was amazed by the excellent turnout of over 50 club volunteers and the efficiency with which the move came off,” said Corey Spitler, president of the Kiwanis Club.

“Our clubs are grateful to the pastor, staff and congregation of the Zion Lutheran Church for their willingness to provide our clubs a new location for processing and storing the 40,000-plus books we receive from generous Wayne County donors,” said Karen Armstrong, president of the AAUW. “This will be the 67th year of the used book sale at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.”

AAUW’s share of book sale proceeds goes to supporting female residents of Wayne County whose post-secondary education has been interrupted. Kiwanis’ share of book sale proceeds goes to building playgrounds in community parks, scholarships for graduating high school seniors and various youth-oriented programs.

The American Association of University Women’s Wooster branch was founded in 1923 and is made up of more than 65 members who volunteer their time to advance gender equality for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.

The Kiwanis Club of Wooster, also founded in 1923, has over 150 active members dedicated to improving the lives of children within the Wayne County community.
