Safe Communities of Wayne County, in partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, has released the latest traffic safety data detailing recent crash statistics and fatalities in the county.

During April, May and the beginning of June, state troopers investigated 281 motor vehicle crashes in Wayne County. Three of the 281 traffic crashes resulted in fatalities, including the most recent that occurred June 1, which remains under investigation.

“Year-to-date figures show Wayne County has experienced 794 total crashes in 2026, resulting in six fatalities,” said Hope Griffin, Safe Communities coordinator for the Wayne County Health Department.

Law enforcement analytics highlight risky driving behaviors as major contributing factors in these incidents. Of the total crashes to date this year, 72 involved unbelted drivers or passengers, 38 involved distracted driving and 28 involved impaired driving.

Safe Communities of Wayne County reminds all motorists that these fatalities are preventable. Drivers can significantly reduce the risk of injury and death by practicing dedicated safe driving habits:

—Buckle up: Ensure you and every passenger wear a seat belt every time on every trip.

—Drive sober: Designate a driver or use a rideshare service if consuming alcohol.

—Stay focused: Put down mobile devices and eliminate distractions while behind the wheel.

Led by the Safe Communities coordinator at the Wayne County Health Department, the Safe Communities Coalition conducts traffic safety media campaigns, coordinates community events and activities, and distributes educational materials to increase traffic safety awareness and help prevent fatal traffic crashes and injuries from occurring in the county. The coalition also focuses on educating the driving population of Wayne County about impaired driving, seat belt use, distracted driving and motorcycle awareness.

The Wayne County Health Department is looking for safety and community partners to join the Safe Communities Coalition. For more information or to join the coalition, contact Griffin at 330-264-9590 or hgriffin@wayne-health.org.

Efforts of the Safe Communities Program are funded through a grant from the Ohio Traffic Safety Office. For more information about OTSO and statewide efforts to improve safety on Ohio’s roadways, visit https://otso.ohio.gov/.
