The best comes in threes for Miller and Weeman

It all came down to one event and one point.

When that final event was over, the Triway Titans had vaulted over Wooster to claim a one-point victory, winning the Orrville Invitational title by a narrow 124-123 margin over the Generals. The Blue and Gold held a one-point advantage heading into the final event, the 1600 relay, which the Titans claimed to take home the first-place hardware in the eight-team event.

"I know you can look through and find places where you could have scored two more points," said Wooster coach Nikki Reynolds. "But, you also score points where you think you won't and don't score where you think you should. Plus, you can't control your competition and Triway had a very nice meet."

While it was a disappointing finish, it didn't overshadow some strong efforts by the Generals. The locals had their effort fueled by several personal bests throughout the team, as well as by Aly Weeman and Claire Miller, who each had a hand in three wins.

Weeman, a senior, showed her polar-opposite abilities, first by winning the discus with a toss of 119-2 on a cold, blustery day, and then stepping onto the track to win the 800 meters with a 2:41.0. Her other win came in the form of another 800 as the 4x8 relay of Miller, Jackie White and Caitlin Ratliff won with a 10:44.3 clocking.

Miller, a sophomore, dominated the distance events. In addition to her role in the 4x800, she won the 1600 with a time of 5:32.0 and coasted to a win in the 3200 (11:58.1).

"This was the first time Aly has run the 800 this year," said Reynolds. "This shows what an all-around athlete she is (because) she was also a member of the 4x8 and the 4x4 relays. Claire broke 12 minutes and 5:30 is her personal best in the 1600, plus the 4x8 had its best time of the year."

The distance events accounted for a major chunk of the Generals' effort as White added points with a third in the 3200 (13:15.0) and a fourth in the 1600 (6:00.6), while Ratliff was sixth in the 800 (2:46.6).

Freshman Jillian Perry added points in the three short sprints, taking fifth in the 200 (28.1) and sixths in the 100 (13.9) and 400 (67.6). Martina Fraga placed fifth in the open 400 (66.8).

Jen Fox added a third in the 300 hurdles (50.9) and she anchored the 1600 relay to a runner-up finish in that event (4:27.8).

Ashley Evans picked up a silver in the shot put (31-9) and Brenna Hart was sixth in that event (27-10), while Claire Ballard was third in the discus (95-6) to back Weeman's win. Liz Lust was sixth in the long jump (13-2.5) while Wooster double-scored in the vault with Sara Green finishing sixth (8-6) and Alyssa Reed eighth (7-6).

"We had a lot of PBs or season-bests," said Reynolds. "With the weather, to get that many is great. If you do your best, you can't ask for more than that.

"It helped we had an invitational and several duals already. You are always going to be nervous, but the big-meet jitters were not as bad. We had everyone back (from spring break), plus going to Orrville, the girls know a lot of people. It's familiar to them."

The Generals competed in the Mount Vernon Relays Saturday and will host the Kiwanis Invitational May 1.
