Deb and Scott Morrison, members of the Tuscarawas County Area Photography Association, will present a virtual program on Wednesday, June 23 at 6:30 p.m., offering tips on how to make photos stand out.

They will discuss travel photography, street photography, landscape photography, night photography and more. The Morrisons will present images of the techniques being discussed and will answer questions participants may have.

Ever since the early 1700s, inventors have devised different techniques to make printed images of things around them. Such pioneers as Louis Daguerre, Thomas Edison, and Auguste and Louis Lumiere made many contributions to the development of photography.

Over time the multi-step process of capturing an image on film and reproducing its likeness on paper has become much simpler. Companies like Eastman Kodak, Pentax, Canon and Nikon manufacture the cameras and other equipment the amateur and professional photographers use in their work. Today, people take pictures using their cell-phone cameras.

Photography has always been a popular hobby. Most people take an interest in it because they want to record important events and capture memories. This pastime allows people to be creative and keep their brains active.

Joining a photography club allows amateur photographers to learn from fellow photographers. As photographers take more pictures, they begin to hone their skills and develop a personal style. They may be confused in the beginning stages, but as they continue practicing, they become wiser and even obsessive about their work.

Iconic photographers such as Ansel Adams, Steve McCurry or Annie Lebovitz might take hundreds of pictures of one subject or landscape in order to achieve the perfect composition. Or they might be in the right place at the right time to capture an image that will be forever riveted in people's minds. In any case they have gathered many successful techniques that allow them to get that perfect shot.

Deb and Scott Morrison have been active members of the Tuscarawas County Area Photography Association for many years. Deb Morrison is currently serving as the secretary and Scott Morrison as the treasurer of the group. Deb Morrison owns Deb Penland Photography and has a shop at Alley Cats Marketplace in New Philadelphia.

“We are lucky,” said Sherrel Rieger, adult program specialist at the library, “to have people like Deb and Scott who are willing to share their knowledge and tips with people who are striving to take better pictures. It is so helpful to be able to tap into their expertise.”
