Fred L. Rhodes, 90, of Park Village Health Care Center, formerly of Dellroy and Weirton, W.Va., died August 5, 2010.Fred was born June 16, 1920, in Terra Alta, W.Va., to the late James and Anna Rhodes. He was a 1938 graduate of Follansbee High School, West Virginia, and following graduation he proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He retired in 1982 as a carpenter for Weirton Steel Company, where he worked for 20 years. He had previously been a self-employed carpenter.Fred was an avid golfer and for many years was a starter at Atwood Golf Course. He was a member of the Weirton Moose, Elks, and Masonic lodges. While in Weirton, he was also a member of the Pleasant Valley Country Club.Surviving are daughters, Robin (Pinson) Chanselle of Winchester, Va., Mary (Roger) Gilkerson and Patty (Duane) Stull, both of Strasburg, and Susan (Ray) Wallace of Sherrills Ford, N.C.; sons, Walter (Jenny) Krantz of St. John, Ind., Joseph “John” (Peg) Krantz of Dover, and Donald “Duck” (Judy) Krantz of Strasburg; sister, Pauline D’Aurora of Florida; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Verna Rhodes; his second wife, Grace Krantz Rhodes; brother, Paul Rhodes; and sisters, Esther Thompson and Helen Rhodes.Private services for the family were held August 7, 2010, at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Strasburg, with Rev. Bruce McLaughlin officiating.
