Montelione takes the helm at Boys and Girls Club of Wooster

Christine Montelione, unit director of the Boys and Girls Club of Wooster, has been promoted to the position of executive director of the local chapter. She succeeds Tom Maurer, who recently completed his one-year appointment as director.

A 2007 graduate of Wooster High School and a 2011 graduate of Miami University where she majored in English and exercise science, Montelione joined the staff just over a year ago when she was hired as a program director. During the past 13 months, she played a vital role in the establishment and growth of the local chapter while overseeing after-school and summer activities, hiring, training, and managing a part-time staff, coordinating volunteers from the community and The College of Wooster, recruiting new members and serving as a liaison between the club and its primary constituents — students, parents, volunteers and administrators from the Wooster City Schools.

“I am very honored to be selected as executive director,” said Montelione. “I am extremely passionate and highly invested in the organization, and I am committed to its continued growth and expansion.”

Before joining the Boys & Girls Club of Wooster, Montelione spent a year in Sacramento, Calif., serving as physical training coordinator and media representative with the Pacific Region of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. While there, she aided communities and nonprofit organizations throughout the country in a team-based national service program, and completed service projects involving disaster relief, environmental education/conservation, and infrastructure improvement. Prior to that, she worked as an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America with The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester (N.H.), where she developed and implemented sustainable fundraising events, coordinated community engagement in mental and physical health activities through social media, and worked with health mentors to improve lifestyle choices for clients of the Center in regard to nutrition, exercise and hygiene.

“We are thrilled to have Christine take over as our new executive director,” said incoming Board of Trustees President Stefan Garcia. “She brings an exceptionally high level of energy and enthusiasm as well as proven skills as an organizer, facilitator, counselor, and fundraiser.”

Maurer, who was instrumental in establishing a solid foundation for the local chapter, will continue his association with the organization as one of its trustees. His efforts included the submission of applications for grants, the organization of fundraising activities, and the establishment of the local chapter at Edgewood Middle School.

“Helping children in this community is everyone's responsibility,” said Maurer. “I'm thankful to have been chosen to start this outstanding organization in Wooster and embrace new challenges for this club.”

Outgoing President Michael Mann praised Maurer for his efforts in establishing a Boy's & Girls Club chapter in Wooster. “Tom did a sensational job in organizing and executing our plan to bring the organization to our City,” said Mann. “We are so very grateful for his dedication and commitment to this endeavor.”

The Boys & Girls Club was officially chartered with the national organization in January. For more information about the Boys & Girls Club of Wooster, visit http://bgcwooster.org/.
