Marjorie M. Degen, age 88 of New Philadelphia, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, in Schoenbrunn Health Care Center at New Philadelphia, following a lengthy illness.

Born in New Philadelphia on March 4, 1930, Marjorie was the daughter of the late Samuel W. and Clara Dorsey Kopp Degen. She received her bachelor’s in education from Duquesne University and also her master's in library science from the University of Pittsburgh. She had taught at various schools in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio and was a former substitute teacher for various school systems in Tuscarawas County. Her last position before retiring was with the Newcomerstown Exempted Village Schools.

Marjorie also had previously been employed by the Akron Public Library and worked in the philosophy, religion and education departments.

Marjorie was a member of Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia; a former member of the Sisters of Divine Charity, Allison Park, Pennsylvania, where she was known as Sister Clara Kopp; a member of the Tuscarawas Genealogical Society; and a life member of the Ohio Retired Teacher’s Association.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Marion J. Degen, whom she married June 29, 1974; her sisters, Eleanor Tylka of Wooster and Carol Brick of Uhrichsville; and brothers, Samuel Kopp of Canton, Edward Kopp of Twinsburg, Larry Kopp of Dover and Danny Kopp of Mansfield. Three sisters and a brother also are deceased.

A funeral mass will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 22 at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church at New Philadelphia with Father Jeff Coning officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 21 from 1-4 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia, where a Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m.
