Loudonville High School track athlete and rising senior Corri Vermilya was recently named a first-team Academic All-American athlete by the National High School Coaches Association for the second consecutive year.

The NHSCA comprises coaches, teachers and administrators representing 22 sports across the United States. Academic standing, athletic performance, character and community service are taken into consideration each year by the voting committee.

According to the NHSCA, a record number of nominees were received for this year’s Academic All-American teams, with 100 student-athletes from across the United States being awarded first-team honors.

“Corri has served as a great representative of our district throughout her high school career,” said Tyler Bates, Loudonville High School athletic director, dean of students and girls basketball coach. “She is active in the community as a volunteer, a standout in the classroom and a record-breaker as an athletic competitor. She does all of this while displaying high character and serving as a role model for so many young people in our community. This is a tremendous honor for her.”

After a year in which she continued establishing herself as one of the state’s top athletes, Vermilya finished as the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association Division III Player of the Year in girls basketball and qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association Div. III state track and field meet in the 100-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles.

During a successful winter basketball season, Vermilya averaged 28.1 points, 12.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 6.0 steals and 1.5 blocks for the Lady Redbirds, who won their seventh consecutive Mid-Buckeye Conference championship.

In addition to her OPSWA state Player of the Year honors, the Ashland University women’s basketball commit also was named state Player of the Year by Prep Girls Hoops, district Player of the Year by the District 4 Coaches Association and Northeast Inland District and conference Player of the Year by the MBC.

Vermilya broke the school record for points in a single game with a 59-point outburst in a 71-68 victory over Mansfield Senior and claimed the school’s crown as the all-time leading scorer with a 44-point performance against Fredericktown. Vermilya is entering her senior year with 1,671 career points.

She finished in third place in a state-wide media vote for the prestigious Ohio Ms. Basketball Award — the highest finish ever for a girls basketball player from North Central Ohio.

The track and field season was equally rewarding for Vermilya and the Lady Redbirds. She helped her team win its third consecutive MBC track and field championship by competing in four events and scoring 38 out of a possible 40 total points.

She was the conference champion in the 300 hurdles and a member of the 4x100 relay team. She finished as the conference runner-up in the 100 hurdles and 100 meters.

The state track and field meet marked the third consecutive year Vermilya qualified to compete at Jesse Owens Stadium.

Vermilya’s performance in the classroom also is outstanding, as she is currently ranked first in her graduating class with a 4.0 GPA. She is an active member of the Loudonville High School chapters of the National Honor Society, Student Council and LEO Club. Vermilya earned top student honors in her college algebra/trigonometry and composition half courses at LHS at the conclusion of the 2022-23 academic year.
