2021 Zachary Davis Scholarship winners named
Audrey Gerry

This year a total of five Tuscarawas County seniors were awarded scholarships to further their education through the memorial foundation named in Zachary Davis’ honor.

“We award scholarships to seniors in Tuscarawas County who are looking to further themselves in an addiction recovery-related field,” said Anita Davis, director of the foundation. “On Nov. 12, 2005, my son, Zachary, died of a heroin overdose. Before he died, he told me if he could tell kids and prevent one person from ever using, he would. And so his story is being told in hopes that his legacy will prevent another death.”

This year’s awardees include the following:

Audrey Gerry - Tuscarawas Valley High School

This senior has chosen to attend Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, where she will major in psychology and sociology with a focus on counseling psychology. Her application rose to the top as it started off with a life quote from Marian Wright Edelman, “Education is for improving the lives of others and leaving your community and world better than you found it.”

“Audrey’s empathic nature with those who need help is commendable,” Davis said. “I am excited to see where her path takes her into the future.”

Brianna Swinford - Tuscarawas Valley High School

Furthering her education at The College of Wooster, this Tuscarawas Valley standout has plans to become a licensed psychologist. In her essay Swinford shared about her passion for helping others who are struggling and her belief that counseling can be a huge benefit to society in general.

“Her letter of recommendation spoke of her high honors in reference to public speaking and debate,” Davis said. “I am confident that Brianna will be a success.”

Lizzie Mullet - Garaway High School

When it comes to a busy schedule, this Garaway senior knows all about the balancing act that is required. Mullet will further her education at Ohio University, where she will be on the nursing practicum.

“She chose a path to nursing because she was inspired by family members and knows the care and human connection that is required,” Davis said. “I wish Lizzie many years of success.”

Autumn Lahmers - Newcomerstown High School

Ohio University will welcome this Newcomerstown student this fall as she pursues a degree in psychology. In her essay Lahmers shared about her passion for helping people and finding ways for others to overcome hurdles.

“I am impressed that she has been on their Teen Leadership Core Class and attended leadership seminars,” Davis said. “Her advisor described her as the one to help others and put their needs ahead of her own. I believe Autumn will have a great road ahead of her.”

Ella Neading - Dover High School

Notre Dame, Indiana will have a Dover Tornado in its rank this fall when this senior begins her post-secondary education at St. Mary’s College. Her plan is to major in psychology, where she wants to focus on helping children in need and be a positive light in a negative time.

“Her letter of recommendation said she is not only well-rounded, being involved in so many activities, but also is a genuinely compassionate person,” Davis said. “I believe she will make a positive difference in the world.”
